The Twilight Saga

Description

This is a picture of the novel Twilight by Stephenie Meyers.

Sociological Interpretation

Language is the most important way for socialization to take place. Without the ability to communicate, our species is unable to socialize. Without socialization we are unable to evolve. Reading and writing are a form of communication and language as well, and thus an important part of our social lives. Reading is a common method for learning and development. Furthermore, the ability to read and write often associates a person with their class level.

A national best seller in both the United States and Canada, the Twilight series by author Stephenie Meyer has appeared all over the world. This picture was taken in Greece, of a translated version of the novel. There is not one place in Canada where you will find a person unfamiliar with the series, and this picture suggests we are not the only ones.

Why is it that a group of fictional characters can greatly affect so many different types of people? Particularly, Twilight becomes gender related as its impact is more commonly directed toward women. The majority of males have only learned about the series due to the complaints their girlfriends or wives have made about them not being their “Edward”. This demonstrates how readers associate these fictional characters within their real social relationships. The book and recent feature films have clearly become more than an entertainment factor. Although the scene is set for a group of friendly vampires, people have found emotional ways to relate to these mythical characters and that is what makes them so popular. The message within Meyer’s text is universal, and that is why we are able to see it all over the world, including Greece. Although culturally we are all very different throughout the world, there are still many things that can connect us. We are all human beings and have the same array of emotions, that which includes love and heartbreak.

  1. I completely agree with what your observing about how popular culture unites the world. Everyone no matter where you are from can relate to charaters in either novels or movies and this helps with the understanding of how similar people can be no matter where they live!

  2. I would agree with you that there is a universal love of the Twilight Saga. I do want to pose the question however, do you honestly feel that the people from each culture and region share the same views of the text? Do you not feel that each culture just as each person within the culture will take something different from what Meyer offers in the text. Meyer simply offers a story - a wonderful story - dont get me wrong - but it is the reader who takes the story and creates its meaning.

  3. I believe that this blog wasn't suggesting that every culture shares the same view of the text, but that simply through the language, it has affected a vast array of people. These people take something different from the text and relate it to their own lives as they see suitable. The point is that socialization occurs through text, and I completely agree. I love Edward.
