Musical Influence

Description:

In this picture you will see a list of songs.

Sociological Interpretation:

Often said to be “The International Language,” music and the culture we are born into influences and shapes our behavior. (Murray Knuttila, Pg. 51) No matter what kind of disposition you are in, you are always able to find a song that fits. Whether it is happy, sad, mad, or even looking to just relax, music affects a personality and feelings every day. Often it is used to elevate our moods above our personal fears as well as doubts and even reduce stress levels along with physical pain. Whether at work or just for self satisfaction, music creates a fun relaxed environment. Having more than just emotional significance, it is a link between individual characteristics and structural explanations. (Murray Knuttila, Pg. 20) The type of music one selects is often an extension of their thoughts and feelings. It is frequently used to link memories or religious connotation to the past or to the future. Music is often found within spiritual and ritual functions. In some cultures before they go on a hunt, there are habitually sacred ceremonies mainly comprised of music and interpretive dance, to call upon the gods for a safe and plentiful hunting. Music’s obvious role in every culture (Murray Knuttila, P.86) is the back bone to expressing ones inner self. Even if you cannot speak the language, you are customarily able to interpret the meaning behind it.

In conclusion, I believe music shapes our personality and behavior every day. Just think how your day would be without the sound of music. Think what it would be like to drive to school/work and not have the background noise of your favorite song. Music creates bliss and allows for common ground to be shared no matter what race or color you are. It allows the recollection of a specific unique moment in time; music is the tag that creates that link. I believe music is a second identity to the one we portray on a day to day basis. The past and the future of music will allow for distinction between the generations and is often a means of categorizing genres (I.e. 70’s, 80’s, 90’s.) Music unites, elevates moods, links memories, and identifies characteristics within a group or individual. I think the distinct characteristics are preparatory to the social roles and structural explanations within our cultures.
